NUMISMATICI IN PUGLIA NEL SECOLO DEI LUMI GIUSEPPE RUOTOLO

ABSTRACT

In 18th century Apulia, an important change occurred in numismatic studies. Alongside the long tradition of scholarship on Roman coins, an interest developed in the money that had circulated in earlier times in small cities and large towns. This specialized field that was established by researchers working in their own communities grew slowly throughout the century and became associated with a realization that, as expressions of power as well as means of power in and of themselves, ancient coins should not be studied solely for their scarcity and beauty but also for their ability to offer a better understanding of the ancient world. In this work, we remember the most important Apulian scholars who were the architects of this change and examine the beginnings of their most significant scientific works.
