SUI DIOBOLI A LEGENDA APΠI-6EPT E SIMILI (ARPI O HERDONIA?)

MARCO MIGLIOLI, ALBERTO CAMPANA

ABSTRACT

Between the late 4th and early 3rd century BC, diobols were struck (containing a head of Athena / horse prancing, followed by Heracles fighting Nemean lion) which bear the particular legend APΠ (or APΠI or APΠA) and CEP (or CEPT or CEPTI). This article reports for the first time on a corpus of these little-known coins, highlighting some die linkages and providing possible historical context. These issues were probably struck between the last years of the Second Samnite War and the beginning of the Third Samnite War. Along with these issues, in the same period, others were minted under Taranto’s influence in various locations arranged along a military barrier separating the Samnite and Roman forces that extended from Arpi in the east to Neapolis in the west. If the legend APΠ (and its various manifestations) constitutes an obvious reference to Arpi, the mysterious legend CEP (and its various versions) seems to refer to a Samnite outpost, a satellite of Arpi, which could be identified with Herdonia, located in the strategic border zone between Samnium and Daunia. Ceρτονια would be, therefore, the name of ancient Herdonia prior to its well-known Roman phase.
