LA CRIPTA DELLE MONACHE CLARISSE
DELLA SANTISSIMA TRINITÀ DI MONTE SANT’ANGELO: DATI PRELIMINARI DAL PROGETTO DI SCAVO, STUDIO E VALORIZZAZIONE

GINEVRA PANZARINO

The present report presents the preliminary results of interventions in the crypt of the Poor Clares of the Santissima Trinità of Monte Sant’Angelo (Foggia). The church is located in the historic center of the town, near the Sanctuary of San Michele and is part of a monastery built in 1404 near the city walls, next to the ancient Junno district. The current church was built on the oldest building around 1630 and then restored in the first half of the 18th century. In the nave there is the funerary crypt, an underground chamber composed of 4 rooms, where the remains of the Poor Clares rest, placed on wooden tables wearing monastic robes and rosaries with medals and crucifixes. 20 depositions are preserved, 1 ‘reduction’ and 2 large accumulations of bones in sec- ondary position: the first refer to the most recent funeral phase, the second to the most ancient depositions moved to make room for subsequent tombs. The material data, in particular the votive medals, indicate a chronology between the 17th and 18th centuries. In the crypt there is also a skeleton mounted on a wooden pole, ‘the Abbess’. The excavation of the crypt is part of a project funded by the Confraternity of the Santis- sima Trinità and directed by the Soprintendenza Archeologia Belle Arti e Paesaggio per le Province di Barletta-Andria-Trani e Foggia and will also include chemical, paleobotanical, histological and toxicological analyzes of the skeletal remains and the restoration of the finds.
