THE NORMAN SICILY PROJECT: DERIVING MEANING FROM THE PROTOTYPE’S DATA

The Norman Sicily Project (NSP) aims to shine a light on one of the most significant but often overlooked chapters of medieval European history – Norman Sicily. Freely accessible, the web application engages audiences both scholarly and lay, af- fording them greater access to data about monuments constructed on the island in the late eleventh and twelfth centuries. As the data are available in both human- and machine-readable formats, scholars from across disciplines can use them to perform a variety of analyses, potentially moving the academic conversation regarding the Nor- mans of the South in new and exciting directions. The NSP also suggests a flexible web-based model for the electronic reconstruction of the past, as it draws on the tools of non-humanities disciplines and incorporates Web 2.0 technologies to enable stake- holders to participate in the reconstruction of their communities’ histories. What follows is an introduction to the project and a discussion of the early interpretations of its monastic data.
Il Norman Sicily Project (NSP) vuole gettare nuova luce su uno dei capitoli della storia medievale europea più significativi ma spesso alquanto trascurato, la Sicilia normanna. Accessibile liberamente, l’applicazione web coinvolge il pubblico accademico e non, offrendo maggiore accesso ai dati sui monumenti costruiti sull’isola tra il tardo undicesimo e il dodicesimo secolo. Poiché questi dati sono disponibili in formati leggibili sia dall’uomo che dal computer, gli studiosi di varie discipline possono usarli per compiere diverse analisi, spostando potenzialmente la conversazione accademica sui Normanni del sud in direzioni nuove ed entusiasmanti.
